Description: This eerie engraving of the fort of São João Baptista de Ajudá, Dahomey (now Benin) was published in the Portuguese magazine O Ocidente in 1886. With its high walls and gloomy aspect, it presents a somewhat imaginary view of the fort that does not correspond to 19th century descriptions by visitors and another more realistic engravings published in 1890. Le walls of the fort were about three meters high and made of mud mixed with clay.
