The arrondissement of Périgueux is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Dordogne département in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Its capital is the city of Périgueux.
History
When the Dordogne department was created on 17 February 1800, the arrondissement of Périgueux was part of that original department.
Geography
The arrondissement of Périgueux is the central western part of the department and it is the largest of the arrondissements of the Dordogne department, with an area of 3,336.5 km2 (1,288 sq mi). It has 189,301 inhabitants and a population density of 56.7 inhabitants/km².
The arrondissement of Périgueux is bordered to the north by the arrondissement Nontron, to the east by the Corrèze department, to the southeast by the arrondissement Sarlat-la-Canéda, to the south by the arrondissement Bergerac, to the west by the Gironde and Charente-Maritime departments and to the northwest by the Charente department.
The Isle river, a tributary of the Dordogne river, and its tributaries Dronne, Lizonne, Auvézère and Loue flow through the arrondissements of Périgueux.
