Virgin of the Rocks facts for kids
This painting by Da Vinci was very controversial and had two versions. The painting itself showed Mary, John the Baptist, Jesus, and an angel. Mary was holding John the Baptist while Jesus blessed them. This painting was quite controversial because Mary wasn't remotely touching Jesus at all, so Da Vinci made a second version of the painting. Mary has a graceful air about her, which was a traditional Renaissance fashion. This painting is the first time in which a Renaissance artist has completely abandoned halos.
