Plot synopsis
A little girl called Lucie loses her handkerchiefs and a pinny and goes on a search for them. She sees some white cloths on the grass high up a hill and climbs up to discover a strange little washerwoman, Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, with her handkerchiefs freshly laundered, along with many other interesting articles such as stockings for a hen. Among the other oddities of the washwoman, she is wearing a excessive number of hair pin, as sticking wrong end out. Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle and Lucie deliver laundry to the locals and eventually Lucie is left with her missing handkerchiefs and pinny. As she tries to thank Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle, all she sees is a hedgehog running down the path, leading Lucie to wonder if Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle was just a hedgehog.
Adaptations
An animated adaptation of the story, shown alongside The Tale of Mr. Jeremy Fisher, was featured on The World of Peter Rabbit and Friends in 1993. The voice of Mrs. Tiggy-Winkle was provided by Prunella Scales.
