Sucré (also known as Sucré Dessert Boutique) was a self-described dessert boutique that was based in New Orleans, Louisiana. In April 2007, the bakery of "Sucré Dessert Boutique" was started by Joel Dondis.
Naming
Sucré is French for sugared. The bakery was named "Dessert Boutique" and also "A Sweet Boutique." The word "boutique" is French for "shop", which derives ultimately from the Ancient Greek ἀποθήκη (apothēkē) "storehouse." In English use, the word boutique is used to refer fashion oriented stores.
Location
Sucré was located on Magazine Street in the Garden District of New Orleans. They operated three retail locations in the French Quarter of New Orleans and Metairie, Louisiana, and shipped the majority of their products in the United States using their website as an online-shopping front for the shops.
History
Sucré was owned by New Orleans restaurateur and former Emeril Lagasse sous chef, Joel Dondis. Dondis partnered with pastry chef Tariq Hanna to open the boutique.
At the time Sucré opened in 2007, it was the first dessert-only restaurant in New Orleans. Sucré served plated desserts with custom garnishes in addition to confections such as flavored marshmallows, artisan chocolate bars, candied pecans, drinking chocolates, as well as hand spun gelato and sundaes.
In 2018, Hanna sold his shares of Sucré and left the company. Joel Dondis became the sole owner of the Sucré Dessert Boutique. Sucré was closed in June 17, 2019, as a result of filed bakruptcy and liquidation. Employees became aware of the news by Joel Dondis calling them to a parking lot and telling them that they no longer had a job. They were tasked to leave or empty the desserts by disposing of them.
