Steele is a town in northeastern St. Clair County, Alabama, United States. It was incorporated in 1952. At the 2010 census the population was 1,043, down from 1,093. The town is a part of the Birmingham–Hoover–Cullman Combined Statistical Area. It was initially known as Steel's Station or Steele's Depot in the late 19th century.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 6.5 square miles (17 km2), of which 6.5 square miles (17 km2) is land and 0.15% is water.

2010 census

At the 2010 census there were 1,043 people, 433 households, and 308 families in the town. The population density was 160.5 inhabitants per square mile (62.0/km2). There were 490 housing units at an average density of 75.4 per square mile (29.1/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.6% White, 0.4% Asian, 3.3% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. 5.1% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. Of the 433 households 23.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.9% were non-families. 25.2% of households were one person and 14.1% were one person aged 65 or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.87.

The age distribution was 19.0% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 29.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% 65 or older. The median age was 43.4 years. For every 100 females, there were 99.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 102.2 males.

The median household income was $36,023 and the median family income was $41,719. Males had a median income of $35,776 versus $29,583 for females. The per capita income for the town was $18,922. About 16.3% of families and 20.6% of the population were below the poverty line, including 44.8% of those under age 18 and 6.7% of those age 65 or over.
