Soldier is a city in Monona County, Iowa, United States, along the Soldier River. The population was 184 at the time of the 2020 census.

Soldier was so named from a nearby unmarked grave of a soldier.

Geography

Soldier is located at 41°59′5″N 95°46′48″W / 41.98472°N 95.78000°W / 41.98472; -95.78000 (41.984598, -95.779916).

2010 census

As of the census of 2010, there were 174 people, 88 households, and 48 families living in the city. The population density was 600.0 inhabitants per square mile (231.7/km2). There were 111 housing units at an average density of 382.8 per square mile (147.8/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.8% White, 0.6% African American, 1.1% Native American, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.9% of the population.

There were 88 households, of which 17.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% were married couples living together, 3.4% had a female householder with no husband present, 1.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 45.5% were non-families (a household of one person or only unrelated persons). 38.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.98 and the average family size was 2.58.

The median age in the city was 52.5 years. 16.1% of residents were under the age of 18; 7.4% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 16% were from 25 to 44; 36.8% were from 45 to 64; and 23.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.4% male and 50.6% female.

Education

Charter Oak–Ute Community School District operates public schools.

Soldier was previously in the East Monona Community School District. On July 1, 2004, the district was dissolved, with portions going to different districts; Soldier was reassigned to Charter Oak–Ute.
