Percilla, also known as Evergreen, is an unincorporated community in Houston County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 95 in 2000.

History

Just before the Civil War, Percilla was initially populated. Evergreen Church opened there in 1879, and throughout much of the 1880s, the settlement went by that name. Citizens asked that the town's name be changed to Procilla in honor of well-known early pioneer J. M. Procilla (or Procella) when a post office was created in 1891. The municipality continues to use the incorrect spelling of Percilla because postal workers misinterpreted the name. Two general stores, Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian churches, as well as an estimated population of 25, were all present in Percilla by 1896. It still possessed a church, a cemetery, and four businesses in the middle of the 1930s. Fifty people were thought to be living there in 1936. By the middle of the 1970s, Percilla had a population of approximately 100. Percilla, a rural village with a church, a community center, a cemetery, and a handful of scattered homes, was dispersed in 1990; 95 people were reportedly living there in that year. In 2000, the population was unchanged.

Geography

Percilla is located at the intersections of Farm to Market Roads 2022 and 228, 6 mi (9.7 km) northeast of Grapeland, 18 mi (29 km) northeast of Crockett, 7 mi (11 km) south of Slocum, and 4 mi (6.4 km) west of Waneta in north-central Houston County.
