Playing career
Jack Darragh moved quickly from the amateur ranks to professional hockey. He earned a place with the Ottawa Senators of the NHA at the beginning of the 1910–11 hockey season when Horace Gaul got injured against the Montreal Canadiens.
Darragh met Ottawa Senators manager Pete Green at the restaurant Uwanta Lunch at Sparks Street in Ottawa. There, he signed a contract with the Senators for $15 a week. He soon showed how valuable he was to the team and during the 1914–15 season, he was chosen team captain. He was second in the league in scoring that year.
Darragh played his entire professional career with the Ottawa Senators. He was a big part of their success, winning four Stanley Cups; in 1911, 1920, 1921 and 1923.
He retired after the 1921 Stanley Cup win, but returned after one season to play for the Stanley Cup-winning team of 1922–23. During his last NHL season in 1923–24, Darrah broke his right knee cap, which kept him from playing much of the season. He retired from professional ice hockey that year.
Playing style
Darragh had a good physique and strong conditioning, which helped him play intensely throughout games. He had speed, strength, grit, and determination, making him a powerful right winger. He perfected the backhand stroke and was a crafty stick-handler. Because he had good chemistry with his team, he and center forward Frank Nighbor developed a system of team play between each other over the years that carried the Senators to many victories.
Personal life and death
In his younger days, Darragh had been a lacrosse player. He was also into distance running and held a place on the baseball team of his employer at the Ottawa Dairy Company.
Darragh and his wife Elizabeth had three daughters: Aileen, Frances, and Marion. He passed away on June 28, 1924, from peritonitis, which was the result of a ruptured appendix. He had only been retired for three months.
