Jörmungandr is a sea serpent in Norse mythology. He is the middle child of the god/jotun Loki and the giantess Angrboða. His full siblings are Fenrir and Hel. According to the myth, Odin took Loki's children. He tossed Jörmungandr into the ocean that surrounds Midgard.
The serpent grew so big that he was able to surround the Earth and grasp his own tail, and as a result he earned the alternate name of the Midgard Serpent or World Serpent. Jörmungandr's arch enemy is the god Thor. There are image stones from ancient times depicting the story of Thor fishing for Jörmungandr.
It is said the last meeting between the serpent and Thor is predicted to occur at Ragnarök, when Jörmungandr will come out of the sea and poison the ocean and the sky. Thor will kill Jörmungandr and then walk nine paces before falling dead, having been poisoned by the serpent's venom.
Asteroid 471926 Jörmungandr was named after the fictional sea serpent.
