Ingrid Bergman (August 29, 1915 – August 29, 1982) was a Swedish actress who starred in a variety of European and American films, television movies, and plays. Her career lasted five decades, and she is thought of as one of the most famous actresses in history.

Early life

Ingrid Bergman was born on August 29, 1915, in Stockholm, to a Swedish father, Justus Samuel Bergman, and his German wife, Frieda "Friedel" Henriette Auguste Louise (née Adler) Bergman, who was born in Kiel. Ingrid was named after Princess Ingrid of Sweden. Although she was raised in Sweden, she spent her summers in Germany and spoke fluent German.

Ingrid's mother died when she was two and a half years old, and her father died when she was about 14. Before his death, Justus had been a photographer and took many photos of his daughter. Ingrid had taken voice lessons for three years and loved to be in front of a camera.

After her father died, Ingrid went to live with aunts and uncles. She later received a scholarship to the state-sponsored Royal Dramatic Theatre School. During her first summer break, however, Bergman was hired by a Swedish film studio and she began to work in films full-time.

Bergman spoke Swedish and German as first languages, English and Italian (learned later, while living in the U.S. and Italy), and French (learned in school). She acted in each of these languages at various times.

Career

Bergman's first film experience was in Sweden in 1935. She began as an extra and worked her way up to starring in movies. She was able to show off her talent by playing many characters with different types of personalities. Her most famous Swedish films are Intermezzo and En kvinnas ansikte (A Woman's Face). She appeared in eleven films in her native Sweden before the age of twenty-five.

In 1939, Hollywood producer David O. Selznick invited Ingrid to move to Hollywood to star in the American remake Intermezzo. The film became an enormous success and as a result, Bergman became a star. She had a natural beauty and wore less makeup than other actresses. She continued to star in Hollywood movies until 1949. Her most famous roles were Ilsa in Casablanca, Maria in For Whom the Bell Tolls, and Paula in Gaslight.

From 1950 to 1955, Bergman left Hollywood to make films with Italian director Roberto Rossellini. She returned to Hollywood in 1956 to star in Anastasia. Bergman continued to star in Hollywood films and television productions. Many of her films were shown in England and France as well. Her most famous movies in her later career were Anastasia (1956), Autumn Sonata (1978), Murder on the Orient Express, and Cactus Flower (1969).

Bergman acted in stage plays throughout her career. Usually, the plays were at the West End, a theater in London, England.

Bergman's last movie was Autumn Sonata (Höstsonaten). She received her seventh Academy Award nomination for her part in the movie. The movie was filmed in Norway while Bergman was battling cancer.

In 1982, Bergman played the Israeli prime minister Golda Meir in a television mini-series, A Woman Called Golda. It was her final acting role, and she was honored posthumously with a second Emmy Award for Best Actress.

Awards

Ingrid Bergman became the second actress to win three Academy Awards for acting: two for Best Actress, and one for Best Supporting Actress. She also won two Emmy Awards and a Tony Award.

Personal Life

Marriages and children

On July 10, 1937, at the age of 21, in Stöde, Bergman married a dentist, Petter Aron Lindström, who later became a neurosurgeon. The couple had one child, a daughter, Friedel Pia Lindström (born September 20, 1938).

Bergman divorced Lindström in 1950 to marry the Italian film director Roberto Rossellini. The couple had 3 children: a boy, Renato Roberto Ranaldo Giusto Giuseppe ("Robin") Rossellini (born February 2, 1950), and twin daughters Isotta Ingrid Rossellini and Isabella Rossellini (born June 18, 1952). Isabella became an actress and model, and Isotta Ingrid became a professor of Italian literature. Bergman's marriage with Rossellini experienced several problems and eventually ended in divorce in 1957.

On December 21, 1958, Bergman married Lars Schmidt, a theatrical entrepreneur from a wealthy Swedish shipping family. The couple divorced in 1975.

Illness and Death

Bergman was diagnosed with cancer in 1974. She underwent surgeries and chemotherapy but continued to work until 1981. She passed away in London on Autust 29, 1982. Her ex-husband Lars Schmidt was there with her. A memorial service was held in Saint Martin-in-the-Fields church in October with twelve hundred mourners in attendance.

Ingrid Bergman was cremated at a private funeral ceremony attended only by close relatives and five friends. After cremation at Kensal Green Cemetery (London), her ashes were taken to Sweden.

In 1980, Alan Burgess helped Bergman write her autobiography, Ingrid Bergman: My Story. She decided to write it after her son warned her that she would only be known through rumors and interviews if she did not tell her own story.

In 1983, stars, friends, and family came to Venice Film Festival to honor Bergman on the first anniversary of her death. They feasted for five days while remembering Bergman and the legacy she left behind.

A bust of Bergman has been placed outside the Lisner Auditorium, in recognition of her protest of racial segregation.

Wesleyan University hosts the "Ingrid Bergman Collection" of Bergman's personal papers, scripts, awards, portraits, photos, scrapbooks, costumes, legal papers, financial records, stills, clippings and memorabilia.
