Description: The original caption for this picture in the book from which it came was "Zamba of Mesquititlan". The photograph was located on page 357 of the book. The paragraph directly preceding this picture in the book describes the traveler's journey to the hamlet of Mesquititlan whereupon he came across a "friendly, and rather a pretty, woman" who was "owner of one of the huts". This picture depicts someone who the book author judged to be a zambo i.e. someone of mixed Native American and black African ancestry. (The term "zamba" is the feminine form of the term "zambo".)
