Image: Winter Snowfall In Appleton
Description: A rare winter snowfall in Appleton, Tennessee. Pictured are The Big Red Store and the Kelton/Butler House. The road in front of these buildings served as a major road that connected Peach, Tennessee to Appleton, Tennessee and further to Florence, Alabama. Note: On December 26, 1864, a bloody Civil War battle, namely the Sugar Creek Engagement, took place on this road crossing Sugar Creek. This road, Appleton Road, was traveled by the last remains of the Confederate Army of Tennessee as they fled the Union Army's advances to Mississippi. At the turn of the century, Appleton became a boom town ginning cotton. The 1950's brought despair to Appleton as factories in larger cities brought better jobs causing many residents to move away.
