Image: William Sutherland, 18th Earl of Sutherland, by Allan Ramsay, 1763
Description: William Sutherland, 18th Earl of Sutherland (1735—1766), by Allan Ramsay, 1763. He is wearing the uniform of a colonel of the Sutherland Fencibles (raised in 1759). The tartan appears to be Black Watch or something very close to it. His headgear could be described as a blue bonnet or a Balmoral; this painting dates to the transitional era between the cap forms.
