Self, a Union supporter, had been convicted of conspiring to burn railroad bridges in Confederate-occupied East Tennessee at the outbreak of the Civil War. Self was later pardoned by Confederate President Jefferson Davis just hours before his scheduled execution. Parson Brownlow, arms folded, looks on.
