Description: The west front of Howden Minster can be firmly dated to the years of Antony Bek's episcopacy in Durham, 1308-11, as his coat of arms was formerly displayed in its stained glass. The date fits well with its architectural style. Bek must have been a prominent patron, quite possibly the sole donor, of the facade. It is one of a series of high-status Yorkshire buildings in the decades either side of 1300 that display strong Rayonnant influence. With its overwhelmingly upward reaching spirit and its beautiful tracery and surface decoration, it is one of the most satisfying creations of its date in England.
