Description: New Canal Light, New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. The historic lighthouse at West End is still standing after the storm-- just barely. Built in 1838, this lighthouse marked the Lake Pontchartrain end of the New Basin Canal. The Canal was filled in in the 1940s except for a 2 block long stretch by the lake used as a boat launch. Some 2 weeks after this photo was taken, the lighthouse collapsed on 28 November.
