The telescope was built ca. 1960 by Carl Zeiss, and has been used until 1988 for scientific withe light, H-Alpha and spectroscopic observations of the sun. It can also be operated as a coronocraph, creating a artificial "total solar eclipse" to observe the solar corona and prominences. Today, the instrument is used for education and outreach purposes.
