Description: Image of George Washington stamp, 2c, issue of 1903 Engraving was modeled after a painting by Gilbert Stuart. R. Ostrander Smith designed the stamp. The vignette, set between two American flags, is sometimes referred to as the Washington 'Flag' stamp by collectors. The die for the stamp was engraved by George F. C. Smillie (portrait), Robert F. Ponickau (frame), and Lyman F. Ellis (lettering and numerals).
