Description: A painting depicting the scene of the new government (Imperial) warship Chōyō being sunk by bombardment from the remnant Shogunate warship Banryū during the Battle of Hakodate Port on May 11, 1869. This colored painting is by Shingo Iwahashi (Masatomo), who was the 7th and 8th gunner of the Goryokaku ("five-point fort") at the time. However, Banryū later sank in turn due to heavy damage. Caption below image: "Naval engagement on the 11th of 5th month Anno 2nd Meidji, Hakodate" (Meidji = Meiji).
