The Wallace say: A field (i.e. war) armour with extra detachable pieces designed to reinforce it, should the wearer so desire. Its design is recorded in a contemporary album preserved in the Victoria and Albert Museum, where it is identified as having been made for ‘Lord Bucarte’, almost certainly Thomas Sackville, Lord Buckhurst, later Earl of Dorset (1536-1608). The Master of the Almain Armoury workshop at Greenwich during this period, from 1576 until his death in 1608, was Jacob Halder, who would certainly have worked on such a prestigious commission himself. This particular armour may have been ordered in early expectation of the arrival of the Spanish Armada in 1588.
