Image: Venefica tentaculata
Description: The witch eel (Venefica tentaculata) typically inhabits midwater (1000 m) depths; but it is seen here on the slope of the Davidson Seamount (1854 meters depth). The largest recorded specimen is 90 cm total length. This specimen (with a broken tail) is approximately 56 cm total length. This in situ observation may be the first time a witch eel has been observed alive.
