Description: On 23 January 1984, Gaston Thorn, President of the CEC, received Vahit Melih Halefoğlu, Turkish Minister for Foreign Affairs. He took this opportunity to inform the Commission of the latest political and economic developments in Turkey. He indicated that Turkey intended to normalize its relations with the Community and with other European organizations.The Commission expressed the hope that the process of restoring democratic freedoms and full respect for human rights in Turkey could continue. It was in the light of developments in these areas that the Community would examine the question of revitalizing its relations with Turkey.
