Description: Map of the states and territories of the United States as it was from March 1853 to December 1853. On March 2 1853, Washington Territory was split from Oregon Territory. On December 30 1853, the Gadsden Purchase added a small part of Mexico to New Mexico Territory. At this point, the borders of the present-day continental United States were complete.
