Description: Mildred Carter, Pilot and Secretary b. 1921 - d. 2011 In 1941 Mildred Hemmons Carter was the first black female to earn a pilot’s license in Alabama—through Tuskegee’s Civilian Pilot Training Program. She applied to fly for the government but was rejected because of race. Her work as a Secretary at Tuskegee Army Flying School during World War II makes her a Tuskegee Airman.
