Description: Stone font, brought from Tournai in Belgium to Winchester Cathedral in 12th century. The four sides of the font are decorated with sculpted scenes from the legendary life of St Nicholas. This panel includes a ship, which is the earliest depiction of a ship with a fixed stern rudder and high prow. The font is carved from carboniferous limestone.
