Description: The Waldo Mansion — of J. P. Waldo, in the Montrose district of Houston, Texas. J. P. Waldo, a Confederate veteran, settled in Houston after the Civil War. He married Mary Virginia Gentry, daughter of railroad promoter Abram Gentry. Waldo soon became a prosperous railroad executive. In 1885 J. P. Waldo built the "Waldo Mansion" at the corner of Rusk and Caroline (2 mi. N of current location). A Mansard roof and tower originally topped the large Victorian style house. Elegant millwork adorned the interior. In 1905 Waldo's son Wilmer Waldo moved the house to the present site, then in the fashionable Montrose area on the edge of town. He had it rebuilt without its exterior Victorian detailing and architectural elements. The Waldo family lived here until 1966.
