Description: The Heritage Centre, Shardlow, Derbyshire. This old warehouse, built in the 1770s is leased from Mansfield Brewery who completely refurbished and equipped it at their own expense as a museum for the village. Shardlow was a busy river port before the canal was authorised in 1766, and construction started in that year under the supervision of James Brindley. The route from Derwent Mouth (one mile away) to the Bridgewater Canal near Manchester allowed passage via Runcorn to the River Mersey, and was fully open by 1777. The section through Shardlow was open and in operation by 1770.
