Description: Satire on the Coterie, a society of ladies and gentlemen, presumably the one about which Horace Walpole wrote to George Montague on 6 May 1770. People are gambling for high stakes ("Mortgage", "£50,000", a jewelled necklace), cheating at cards, flirting, drinking, kissing; a lady holds up a miniature of her husband while embracing another man who makes the sign of the cuckold behind the portrait; a couple are heading up a staircase. Illustration to the London Magazine, 1770. Etching and engraving
