Description: The former Chinese Garden at Duke Gardens in New Jersey. The serenity bridge crossed a koi stream surrounded by rock formations, with bamboo and camphor trees. Doris Duke designed this garden to illustrate the small private Chinese style gardens that many wealthy Chinese families created in the early 20th century. History Duke Gardens featured distinct designs inspired by diverse cultures and regions of the world for 11 Indoor Display Gardens. Italian, Colonial, Edwardian, French, English, Chinese, Japanese, and Indo-Persian designs wereare juxtaposed near desert, tropical, and semi-tropical greenhouse environments. In 1958, Doris Duke began a six-year process of designing and creating the display gardens. She traveled the globe seeking specimens and ideas to complete the gardens, which she first opened to the public in 1964. On May 25, 2008, the Indoor Display Gardens were closed indefinitely by the Trustees of the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.
