Ireby (or Low Ireby) was granted a charter in 1236 to hold a weekly market, and in its 17th century heyday was one of Cumberland's principal towns. It was sometimes known as "Market Ireby". The house behind the cross has a grey window surround showing the date 1577 - this is the back of <a href="https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/1785166">NY2338 : Moot Hall, Ireby</a> .
