Text Appearing Before Image: f concrete in theworld, over 26,000 barrels of cement being usedin making the concrete. The breast wall of thelock is 40 feet thick,, 80 feet high and 126 feetlong at the base. The dimensions of the cham-bers, which are built of steel plates, give aspace in each of the two chambers of 140 feet inlength, 33 feet in width and a depth of 9 feet 10inches. The guide towers rise 100 feet from thefoundation. The base of the tower measures 26feet 6 inches by 40 feet 8 inches. The depthof water in each chamber is b^ feet, weighing,approximateh% 1,300 tons. There is a pressurein the presses, during operation, of 600 poundsto the square inch. The external diameter ofthe cylinders is 8 feet 3^2 inches, the diameterof the ram being 7 feet, 6 inches, with a work-ing stroke of 65 feet. The presses are thelargest thus far constructed. The work of ex-cavation occupied four years. This was fol-lowed by the concrete work, which took a con-siderable time to perfect before the erection of CAXADIAX CANALS. Route.— The route of the canal is nowopen for continuous navigation from HeeleysFalls on the Trent River to beyond the shoresof Balsam Lake, a distance of over 126 miles,and by the completion of a second hydrauliclift-lock, near Kirkfieid, Ont., early this year(1906), will give access to the waters of LakeSimeve, embracing a rich agricultural district,several centres of large and important industries,the limestone and granite quarries of Ciear andStony Lakes, extensive lumber and timber loca-tions and the promising stone and granite areaabove Coboconk.
