Description: Fragment of textile or carpet from Loulan, Xinjiang province, China, dated to 3rd-4th century AD. The wool fragment was retrieved from a refuse heap in Loulan, Xinjiang, China, by the Hungarian-British archaeologist Sir Marc Aurel Stein in 1906-1908. The object was among those discovered by Stein's second Central Asian Expedition, partially financed by the governments of India and of Great Britain. The finds were divided between the two countries. Image of the fragment courtesy of the British Museum, London.
