Description: Nelson College for Girls was established in 1883 and was one of the earliest girls’ secondary schools. The first head mistress was Kate Edger who in 1878 became the first woman in the British Empire to be awarded a university degree. Tennis became an acceptable and popular sport for women and girls in the 1880’s. Kathleen Nunneley won the New Zealand ladies singles title thirteen consecutive times between 1895 and 1907 and led the New Zealand women’s team to victory over the Australians in 1909.
