Description: Flood damaged houses at Clermont, 1916. The 'Clermont Disaster' was caused by a cyclone that crossed the coastline between Bowen and Mackay on 27 December 1916. Torrential rain over the catchments of Wolfgang and Sandy Creeks above Clermont precipitated great flooding that cost 61 lives and caused enormous damage to buildings and livestock. The lower part of Clermont was submerged and the Theresa Creek recorded its highest flood level. (Information taken from: B. Harman, Documentary and investigation of the Clermont storm, December, 1916). This image shows some devasted houses and shops at Clermont. A man poses in the foreground.
