Description: St Hilary Transmission Mast ITV's Channel 10 station was sited at St Hilary Down between Cardiff and Swansea at 413 ft above sea level and serves the area surrounding the Severn estuary and the Bristol Channel, including South Wales,Monmouthshire, Somerset, parts of Gloucestershire and other counties. It would have been preferred to have a mast height of 1,000 ft. but because of the nearby Rhoose Airport the height was restricted to 750 ft. The site opened for programme service on 14th January 1958 though there was some public disappointment about the comparative grades of service in some shielded locations in the deeper valleys of South Wales and in low-lying parts of Bristol and Bath. This subsequently led to the use of well-designed receiving aerials and more sensitive 'fringe' area receivers have to some extent overcome the low signal strength and 'ghost' images experienced in such localities.
