Description: St. Matthew’s Church, Bayswater, bathed in February sunshine, revealing the golden stone, stained with sooty deposits from 140 years of exposure to the polluted air of London, the quality of which is now, fortunately, much improved, thanks to successive episodes of legislation. The church was built in 1880, architect John Johnson. Some of the stained glass is probably by Morris & Co. Organ by J. W. Walker & Sons Ltd. This Victorian Gothic Revival church was funded by John Derby Allcroft of Stokesay Court in Shropshire, and is one of several London churches which he financed. Completed in 1882, replacing an earlier church constructed in 1818. The current incumbent (2023) is the Reverend William Coleridge, a descendant of the poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The church maintains a thriving spirituality and a continuing tradition of musical excellence under musical director Max Pappenheim.
