Description: We took this hike into the Twentymile Creek wilderness in June 2009. The trail is part of the Upper Winner Creek trail. The trail head is behind the Alyeska Hotel near Girdwood, Alaska, about 30 miles south of Anchorage. The start of the trail is over boardwalk and nice wide path. At a trail junction a left turn takes you to the lovely Winner Creek Gorge while a right turn leads to the Upper Winner Creek trail which somewhere turns into the Twentymile Creek wilderness - there are no signs so we never knew where we were. The Upper Winner Creek trail is in good shape and fairly well marked and maintained, but there are several creeks to ford. We went in about 5 miles, entering a nice valley, the trail high above a creek, then crossing some rock fields, ending at a very nice waterfall. The trail continues to a pass but we were all satisfied and turned back. Very nice hike but this is prime bear country, so be prepared. Enjoy.
