Description: African House at Melrose Plantation — in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Built circa 1800 as a storehouse and jail for rebellious slaves. It is possibly of African design and is one of the earliest buildings built by blacks. Although the name of this file calls it a slave dwelling, it was never used as housing.
