Image: Sir John More by Hans Holbein the Younger
Description: Portrait study of Sir John More. Black and coloured chalks on paper, 35.4 × 27.6 cm, Royal Collection, Windsor. Sir John More (1450/53–1530) was an English judge, the father of Sir Thomas More (1477/88–1535). This drawing is one of seven fine surviving studies drawn by Holbein for his group portrait of Thomas More's family. Here More wears a gown with a fur collar, but in the group portrait, he wears his judge's robes. According to art historian Susan Foister: "The drawing demonstrates Holbein's great facility with the chalk medium and variation of touch, from the quick zigzags of the fur to the softness of hair and eyebrows, and the subtle shading in red and black suggesting the sagging flesh around the deep eye-sockets and cheekbones" (Susan Foister, Holbein in England, London: Tate, 2006, ISBN 1854376454, 35).
