Description: Scottish National Portrait Gallery The Scottish National Portrait Gallery was the first purpose-built portrait gallery in the world. Opened in 1889 it was John Ritchie Findlay, the chief proprietor of The Scotsman, who not only paid for the construction and provided an endowment, but also masterminded the building of the gallery.
