Description: 'Saint Mary of the Snows' hanging scroll. This is one of the few Western-Japanese (Nanban Art) religious art pieces that survived the long persecution period in Japan. It was probably made in Nagasaki by a Japanese Christian painter under the tutelage of painter Nicolao, S.J., between 1600 and 1614. This is a western style Mary, painted on Japanese paper, with Japanese colors and Japanese drawing techniques. Though damaged, the painting shows the wonderful art mingling achieved in the beginnings of S. XVII. There were probably many paintings like this, but just a few of them remain in the world.
