Description: The kite balloon ship HMS Canning with her observation balloon anchored off Salonika with kite balloon aloft, November 1915. D&W Henderson of Glasgow built the ship in 1896 as a cargo ship for Lamport & Holt Line. She was a transport ship in the Second Boer War 1899–1900. The Admiralty bought her in 1915 and commissioned her as a kite balloon ship. In 1917 she became a depot ship at Scapa Flow and in 1919 she was returned to Lamport & Holt. In 1920 Mrs G Visalia bought her, renamed her Okeanos and registered her in Piraeus. In 1924 Ditta Luigi Pittaluga Vapori bought her, renamed her Arenzano and registered her in Genoa. She was scrapped in Genoa in 1924.
