Description: Remains of Conyngham's fishing complex on Rutland Island In the 18th century, William Burton Conyngham (a local landowner) decided on a business venture to build a fishing station on Rutland Island to exploit the large herring shoals then running off the coast. This 'new town', with streets, houses, pub, post office etc was purpose built between 1785-1788. Unfortunately, the herring disappeared very early in the 1800's and the station fell into dis-use. The photo shows some of the remains of the factory and landing stage on Rutland Island. Most of the other remains are now covered by sand dunes.
