Description: Rafinesque's big-eared bat. While visiting caves and mines during winter hibernation gives biologists an excellent opportunity to count bats, it's a sensitive time for the animals. If bats stir too much during hibernation, they may use up fat stores needed to get them through winter. For this reason, biologists visit caves and mines as rarely as possible and work quickly while underground. Credit: Gary Peeples/USFWS www.fws.gov/asheville/
