Description: Painting of Mary I, Queen of England and Ireland. She is wearing a pendant with a large pearl, a gift from king Philip II of Spain on the occasion of their marriage in 1554. The pearl was once identified with 'La Peregrina' (the Wanderer) which was last owned by Elizabeth Taylor. When Taylor and her husband Richard Burton learned the National Portrait Gallery did not posess a portrait of Mary I yet, they assisted in the purchase of this painting. The pearl however is not La Peregrina and is now identified as the 'Mary Tudor Pearl'
