Image: Postcard - Spreckels Lake Golden Gate Park c1904-6 San Francsico CA
Description: Postcard: circa March 1904 - March 1906. Possibly printed in Germany. Original image probably a hand-colored black and white photograph. The view is the northwest corner of Spreckels Lake in Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA looking north toward 36th Avenue and Fulton Street intersection on left of image with the Fort Miley Military Reservation/Point Lobos in the far background along the visible ridge line. Definitely pre-April 1906 Quake. The model boats would belong to members of the San Francisco Model Yacht Club for whom the lake was built in 1902-04. Note the near-complete absence of buildings or homes in the background of the image although electric/telephone poles have already been erected along the Fulton Street corridor. (Today the area is the heavily built-up Outer Richmond, a mainly residential district of San Francisco) Note: The following items appear to have been added by a retouch artist to the original image. The horse-drawn carriage. Seated people on a 'bench.' Unknown object in the background near the carriage. Buildings in the image have been artistically 'enhanced' and are probably not real. 'Building' at far-left edge of image would be inside park grounds where no buildings ever existed. slight retouching to people on left of image, especially those in background. Aug 2013: Removed staining & spotting from scanned image, otherwise as 'found.' Spreckels Lake, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco, CA, USA
