Description: Portrait of the Portland Viewed from the starboard quarter. The tafferel has a small oval shield with angel supporters. It is inscribed ‘no 4’ and ‘t vergadt / poortlant’. This is an unsigned pencil and wash drawing by the Elder. It is rubbed on the back but does not seem to be an offset and it may have had an offset taken from it. The ‘Portland’ was not in the fleet which brought Charles II from Holland in 1660. She was probably drawn at Chatham. Portrait of the Portland
