Description: John Fayram (fl. London 1713 - 1743) A portrait of Captain William Hervey (1699–1776), three-quarter length, holding a telescope, with a British ship in the distance signed and dated lower right: Ao: 1739 / J. Another portrait by John Fayram of this sitter, in a slightly different pose and in different costume, is at Ickworth House, Suffolk. (https://www.nationaltrustcollections.org.uk/object/851926) Third son of John Hervey, 1st Earl of Bristol (1665–1751), by his second wife, Elizabeth Felton, William was educated at Westminster, entered the Royal Navy in 1716 and became a Captain. At his father’s suggestion he agreed to an arranged marriage in 1729 with Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Ridge, a rich brewer of Portsmouth; she died in giving birth to their only child Elizabeth in 1730. In 1742 Hervey was cashiered out of the navy by court martial for his excessive harsh discipline at sea.
