Description: Pilchuck Julia, of the Snohomish people, was said to have witnessed the 1855 treaty signing which gave up traditional tribal lands in exchange for reservation land and promises of government aid. She and her husband stayed at their home on the Pilchuck River near the town of Snohomish. Pilchuck Julia supported the family by making baskets and by selling clams, salmon, and berries. She died of smallpox in 1923 and is buried in the G.A.R. Cemetery in Snohomish. This portrait of Pilchuck Julia was taken in 1915 by William Douglas. She was a much photographed figure in Snohomish.
